KeyMentor helps high-school students plan for college. Doing that means you trust us with real details about your grades and your life. This page explains, in plain language, exactly what we collect, where it lives, and what we will and won't do with it.

What we collect

Only what you choose to enter. There are a few kinds of information:

  • Your profile answers. Your grade, intended major, GPA, test scores, courses, activities, awards, essay ideas, target colleges, and anything else you enter about yourself. Some of this is sensitive academic and personal information.
  • Account details (optional). If you create an account to save your plan, we store your email address. If you sign in with Google, we receive your email and basic profile from Google.
  • What you post, if you use the community. Your handle, your posts and comments, and your direct messages with mentors.
  • Your mentor profile, if you volunteer as one.The details you fill in — your name, school, career field, what to ask you about, an optional photo and LinkedIn link — are shown to students in the mentor directory. That's the point of it, so please put in only what you're happy for students to see.

We do not ask for your home address, phone number, or payment information.

Where your information is stored

  • In your browser, by default. If you use KeyMentor without an account, your profile answers and the plan generated from them are saved only in your own browser (local storage) on the device you used. We do not have a copy on our servers.
  • In our database, only if you create an account. When you sign in and save a report, your profile and report are stored in our database (hosted by Supabase) so you can return to them. Anything you post in the community is stored there too.

How we use it

We use your information for one purpose: to generate your personalized college plan and fit analysis, and to run the mentoring and community features you choose to use. The plan itself is produced by a deterministic, rule-based engine; an AI model is used only to put the result into plain language. To do that, the details you enter (such as your grade, scores, courses, and activities) are sent through our AI gateway, OpenRouter, which routes them to a large language model that writes the explanation.

We do not use your information to train our own models, and we never use it for advertising.

Helping us improve our AI (optional)

When you create an account, we ask one optional question in a box of its own, separate from the terms you have to agree to. It reads, word for word:

You can use my profile and my messages with mentors to improve KeyMentor’s AI assistant.

This one is optional. It stays off unless you turn it on, and leaving it off changes nothing about your account. Turning it on lets our team read those things to check the AI’s answers to students and make them better. We never sell your information, use it for advertising, or share it with colleges. You can turn it on or off any time under Account & data.

It is off unless you switch it on.Leaving it alone changes nothing about your account, your rating, or your mentor, and nobody is told either way. Whichever way you answer, we record the answer, the date, and which version of the wording above you were shown — so if we ever want to use your information for something this sentence does not cover, we have to come back and ask you again.

The community and mentoring

In the community you appear under a handle, not your real name. Other students and mentors see the handle and what you post — never your email, your school, or your profile data. Please keep it that way: our guidelines ask you not to share personal contact details in posts, comments, or messages, even with your own mentor.

Direct messages are private between you and your mentor, with one exception: if a message is reported, our admins can review it along with the messages around it in that thread, so a report can be judged in context. The person you report is never told who filed it.

Service providers we share data with

We rely on a small number of third-party providers (sub-processors) to run the service, and we share only what each one needs to do its job:

  • Supabase: database and authentication. Stores your account, saved reports, and community content when you create an account.
  • OpenRouter: AI gateway. Receives the profile details needed to generate the plain-language explanation in your plan.
  • Vercel: hosting. Serves the site and keeps standard server logs.
  • Google: optional sign-in. Only if you choose “continue with Google”.
  • Givebutter: donations. If you give, your payment details go to Givebutter and never touch our systems. Students never need to donate.

How long we keep it

Without an account, your data lives only in your browser until you clear it. We never receive a copy, so there is nothing for us to keep.

With an account, we keep your profile and saved reports until you delete them or ask us to delete your account, at which point we remove them from our database.

How we protect it

Data is encrypted in transit (HTTPS) between your device and our providers, and access to the database is restricted by row-level security so each account can only reach its own data. No system is perfectly secure, but we limit what we collect and who can touch it.

What we never do

  • We do not sell your information.
  • We do not share your profile with colleges, recruiters, or admissions offices.
  • We do not use your information for third-party advertising.

Children under 13

KeyMentor is for people aged 13 and older, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we learn that an account belongs to someone under 13, we delete the account and the information attached to it.

If you are a parent or guardian and believe your under-13 child has created an account or shared information with us, email us at the address below and we will delete the account and any associated information.

Students under 18

Most of our users are between 13 and 18, and we know much of what they share is sensitive. We collect only the academic and goal-related information needed to build a plan, never make it public, and never share it with colleges, recruiters, or admissions offices. A student or their parent can email us at any time to delete the account.

Your control over your data

  • No account:clearing your browser data, or using your browser's “clear site data” option, removes everything KeyMentor has stored on your device.
  • With an account: you can delete saved reports at any time, delete your account from your profile page, or email us to have it removed for you.

Changes to this policy

If we change how we handle your information, we'll update this page and the “last updated” date above. Significant changes will be made clear before they take effect.
